Don’t tell us that summer is coming to an end; we simply won’t accept it! Here at MetMo we live in an eternal summer, full of engineering and mechanical joy . Let’s get into what we’ve been up to this past month…

MetMo Eddy

A new MetMo arrives tomorrow and its name is Eddy!

Say hello to the most satisfying way to drop the ball: a precision-machined copper desk toy that uses eddy currents to slow a powerful neodymium magnet before your eyes.

This slow guy launches tomorrow at 4pm BST, don’t miss out!

We have been fiddling with eddy currents for the last 9 months trying to harness their power for good. We’re now ready to share the findings in the form of powerful magnets, copper, and gravity.

Below you can see some of our prototypes! From the first initial design where we mixed copper and glass to tragic effect, to thick, dense tubes where the motion was all but hidden, we went through different iterations testing different shapes and sizes. Eventually we worked towards a balance of letting you see and interact with the ball as it fell, leaving enough metal and getting the curves and copper in the right places so that those magic eddy currents were still created.

This all took us quite some time as, not so surprisingly, no one has developed any simulations of this. This put us down to doing it the good old fashioned way on the lathe, whittling away billets of copper until we got it right!

Open Afternoon

Our next open afternoon is swiftly approaching! We’re opening our shutters again next Saturday the 5th at 1pm BST. If you’re planning on coming and haven’t let us know, please RSVP HERE.

News From the Shop Floor

Piston Stand Upgrade
Ever since we launched Piston (heh) it’s been flying off the shelves, and our Piston stand gives you double the fun! We’ve had a lot of feedback on this guy over the past year; they work well and the seal is good, but it’s always been a bit fiddly. We sent Geoff off to his workshop to have a tinker… And now we have a new version! You can now seat the O-rings in the stand itself, for less fiddling and more fidgeting.

Pocket (Grip) Full of Foam
For the crowdfunders amongst us you’ll be pleased to know we’ve got heaps and heaps of Pocket Grip parts piling up in the workshop. To others it looks like hunks of weird metal shapes, but for us it’s seeing our dreams coming to life. Don’t stick your leg out of the bed though, you might get clamped.

We’ve also got our lovely foam parts which make the whole thing look really legit - it’s all coming together! Now we just have to decide whether we keep the foam nubbin…
